Learning the right way to stencil is the best way to bring out your inner-artists and also create a handcrafted finish on any of the surfaces such as walls, furniture, wood, metal, paper and fabric.
Stenciling with machine quilting templates is as easy as it is fun and also tends to inspire a feeling of creative satisfaction. The pieces made by hand have a certain charm and a vibe that is quite undeniable. It is a quality that a store-bought art cannot compete with. Not to mention, the stencils are also economical. You can even reuse the quality stencils time and again with simple care and proper storage. Whipping up a design that looks amazing for a fraction of the cost is just a dab (or roll) of paint away.
Tools and Supplies you will need
- Application Tool: brush, dabber, sponge, or roller
- Adhesive: painter’s tape or spray adhesive
- Paint: acrylic (matter), chalk paint, stencil crème
- Paint tray: to hold the paint or blend and create custom colors
- Paper towel or rags: to offload the paint before stenciling
- Ruler/tape measure: measure and align the artwork
- Stabilizer: dowel, pencil, or any stick-like tool
- Ultimate pounce powder
Things to remember
- Texture is important
You can stencil almost anything, but not everything! You will not be able to stencil rough or heavily textured surfaces. This is because the stencil will not be able to lay flat on a textured surface, and the paint will bleed underneath areas that do not contact the surface.
Make sure you sand down the rough textured wood, scrape and sand any loose or cracked paint before you begin with your stencil drawing. Remember, the smoother, the better.
- Prep the surface before you begin
You need to do this every time, for every project!
If you do not prepare the surface beforehand, you will at risk of producing a failed project. Stenciling over a surface that is unprepared will be like building a house on a sand hill. All of the work will slide and peel off. So, make sure you have done the important preparation before beginning your artwork.
